Terressentials will be reviewed in today’s post. I try to not be an alarmist. I will just state the fact that there is an ongoing debate whether or not antiperspirants containing aluminum compounds, may pose a health risk. There are also studies that have found that some deodorants with parabens and triclosans pose a risk as well. Triclosan is an endocrine (hormone system) disrupter. Some health agencies and, of course, the manufacturers of these products, are quick to point out that these studies all have flaws, so consumers should not be concerned.
I’m both concerned and confused.
Terrressentials and Deodorant vs. Antiperspirants
I try not to be an alarmist.
I have used deodorants and antiperspirants, so first let me explain the difference between them. While they both stop arm pit odor, they each use different processes to do that.
Deodorants allow the release of perspiration, but they prevent odor with antiseptic agents, which then kill the odor-causing bacteria.
Antiperspirants contain chemical compounds that completely block your pores. This stops the discharge of perspiration so you don’t sweat, and therefore, you don’t have underarm smell.
Most experts agree that it appears to be safer to use a deodorant. In addition, I could not find any antiperspirant that didn’t have “blacklisted” ingredients. Anyone is welcome to correct me on this and I’d be happy to check it out for myself and my readers.
Terressentials Organic & 100% Natural Body Care
I searched for deodorants in local pharmacies, big box stores (Walmart, Target, etc.) and also searched the internet; online is where I came across a company, Terressentials, that intrigued me. Terressentials Organic & 100% Natural Body Care, advertises as, “Having nothing to hide,” and “Chemical-free for real.” However, my favorite slogan of theirs is: “Organics for smart people.”
Terressentials has a full line of USDA (The United States Department of Agriculture) Certified Organic body care products. Terressentials handcrafts all of their products.
The founders of Terressentials are Diana and Jim. Fortunately Diana is O.K. now, but she nearly died. In the 1980’s, Diana developed non-hodgkins lymphoma (which is cancer of the lymph/detox system linked to chemical exposures). She underwent experimental doses of chemotherapy, and, with an immune system damaged by this chemo, she began to study the toxic nature of synthetic substances and their effects on our body. Diana points out that it does not make sense to put organic food in your mouth, and then rub synthetics on your skin. True!! Diana and Jim also came across this fact, which I didn’t even realize: “We absorb more toxins through our skin and via inhalation than through the food that we eat.”
The co-founders studied the rules for labeling food when they formulated their products. There are no ingredients in any of their products that would not be allowed in the making of a “certified organic” food. Very impressive, indeed!
If you have a question regarding orders, shipping, or product information that is not listed in their Frequently Asked Questions page you can email Terressentials. This email address is where I wrote to ask questions regarding the deodorants. I learned that Terressentials deodorants are one of only two products that they do not offer in a trial size. The reason is that they have not found a cost effective delivery system for a trial size.
Terressentials has four deodorants: Super Protection Fragrance-free Organic Aloe Vera, Organic Zen Spice, Organic Lavender Fresh, and Organic Zesty Citrus. They all have the same base, which is the fragrance-free “scent.” The others have added essential oils which give them their scents. The lavender and citrus are those scents. Terressentials described the Organic Zen Spice for me as, “the most complex. It doesn’t have a predominate note. While not being strongly masculine, in general, it seems to appeal to guys.”
Terressentials had a statement on their website that said the deodorant is formulated to help neutralize the sulfur compounds that can result from eating garlic! Terressentials wrote and told me the following, “When you eat things like garlic or onions, you can release volatile sulfur compounds through your pores, especially in the underarm area. Our deodorant contains ingredients that neutralize these volatile compounds by naturally changing them to a non-volatile (i.e., non-smelly) form. I’d like to add that this is only part of what makes our deodorant work; other ingredients have other functions which help to naturally reduce odor in other ways. It’s this “multi-pronged” approach that makes our deodorant so effective. We’ve tested other natural deodorants that are made from, say, lemon juice, or mineral salts, and we found that they just didn’t cut it.”
I love that Terressentials not only responded to my inquiries, but also was quite happy to help me learn about their products, even as I was clearly, what I would term, a “cautious” customer.
Terressentials and My Order
I placed my order for Organic Lavender Fresh Deodorant (3 oz. for $10) and Fragrance-free Organic Aloe Vera Deodorant (3 oz. for $10). The shipping and handling cost was $8.75. There are no stores in my state, so I was not charged a sales tax. My total cost was $28.75.
It took only one business day for them to process my order, and I received it via USPS in 4 business days, within the promised window. Allow more time if you are on the west coast, since they are located in Maryland.
After unpacking from the box :
The foam “peanuts” that lined the box/deodorants, are biodegradable (a phone number is provided regarding recycling them), and the receipt, which was included, is printed on recycled paper.
Make sure to shake well before using, and do not use
immediately after shaving!
Without hesitation, I highly recommend the two deodorants I purchased. I had my 8th Grade daughter help me by testing out the Lavender Fresh Deodorant, while I tested the Fragrance-free Aloe Vera. We both agreed they are very effective!! We each found the “scents” to be pleasant and never once did we smell any body odor. It soon became a family joke having Dad and little brother trying to determine if they could smell our pits! Not once, even after a mother-daughter run (my daughter is trying to train me!) did we detect any smell.
A list of the stores that carries Terressentials can also be found on their website.
Here’s their funny response to why their products aren’t available in every natural product store: “We try very hard to get our products into good stores everywhere. Let’s just say that not all of the buyers in stores are enlightened enough yet to understand why they should carry Terressentials products.” Terressentials has this policy: “Due to the the fact that the items are all handcrafted, there are no returns.”
