I entered the Summer Hair Challenge, which was run by the website: No More Dirty Looks: The Truth about Your Beauty Products–and the Ultimate Guide to Safe and Clean Cosmetics. The book, written by Siobhan O’ Connor and Alexandra Spunt, is one that I previously reviewed here, on my site, and continue to reference. (Past review)
When I saw a post about a Hair Care Challenge, I was all over it. Plus, as the infomercials would say, “But Wait…there’s More!…” Yes, here’s what @Nodirtylooks wrote:
“This year we’re offering some extra incentive too: A brain-meltingly good haircare basket courtesy of NuboNau. The winner—who will be chosen at random—will get products from Rahua, John Masters, and Intelligent Nutrients. Worth the price of admission, wouldn’t you agree?”
Why, yes, of course, I agree!
Here were the rules and instructions: “Some time in the next few days, when you get up in the morning, shower, shampoo and condition your hair using nontoxic natural products, comb it when you get out of the shower, and that’s it. No leave-ins, no heat. Once it’s dry, send us a pic. No sneaking in a little blast from the dryer on your roots, no irons, no natural leave-ins, and certainly no toxic ones. Naked hair, air-dried.”
Instructions: As we said above, you have to get it wet, whether you use shampoo and conditioner or both or neither is up to you. You can use a brush or a pick, obviously. Once your hair is dry, take a pic with your phone or computer or whatever and send it to us at nomoredirtylooks (at) gmail (dot) com with HAIR CHALLENGE in the subject line.”
Why is No More Dirty Looks doing this challenge: ”We all wage war with our hair on a semiregular basis trying to make it look some other way than it does naturally, and hey, nothing wrong with that. We do it too. But we also want to see what happens when we switch to nontoxic, nonstripping products, and then leave our manes alone.”
Moxie followed the directions: Naked hair, air-dried. Here’s my picture:
Why am I OK with how my air-dried, naked hair looks? I believe it’s because I always make sure to get regular trims from my hair stylist. Let me preface my personal comments with this full disclosure: I am not a hair stylist.
I listen to what countless articles, shows, and my own stylist recommends.
On average, hair grows one half inch, every four weeks.
I like the length of my hair, (as seen in the photo), and therefore every six to eight weeks I have it trimmed to maintain it at that length.
By scheduling haircuts on a regular basis, I have been told that it helps to keep my hair not only healthy, but strong. Anything additional that someone does to their hair (be it coloring or perms, etc.) *may* cause hair to become dry or have split ends, and that would require more frequent trims.
For the record, I do not perm my hair. I actually used to, in the early 90′s, and let’s just say…fortunately I am not a star, as my picture would be featured in one of those “What was she thinking?” Uh-huh, Hip? Of course, I thought so. Looking back. Not. At. All.

This comp would have been perfect for me as that is literally how I style my hair. I’ll leave the house while it is still wet and however it dries is my style for the day. I do have naturally quite curly hair so it does make it easier for me as curls count as a hair style! The only thing I don’t always stick to is a shampoo and conditioner with no harsh chemicals. I try to use Lush or Alchemy though sometimes use Moroccan oil.
When I finally started work after 8 years of being a student the first thing I did was start getting haircuts every 8 weeks at a decent salon as I could finally afford it. Before then I’d grow my hair for the year then chop it all off in the summer break. Since becoming a stay at home mum I have switched back to only getting my hair cut twice a year – usually just before a special event like a friends wedding.
Sarah, my children are now school-age, but I do remember that, like you, I did not get my hair cut on a regular basis when they were younger. Who had time?! x I’ve never tried Alchemy, but now that I see they’re on Twitter, I’m going to thank you in a tweet to them! xo
I am entirely jealous of your hair right now, mine needs to be beat into submission to look half as good as yours.
LOL! I’m not believing a word of it, but I really appreciate the very kind compliment! xo
Lovely hair, you have beautiful soft curls and natural colour!
One of the things that bothered me most when I moved to London was that I cannot let my hair dry naturally in winter. I have too much of it, and it’s long, so I freeze to death if going out on wet hair…
On the natural cosmetic side, have you ever tried a vinegar rinse as conditioner? It leaves your locks very shiny.
Hi, Andrea!
Actually, I can’t remember what magazine article I was reading, but last year there was something about using vinegar for your hair. Thought it sounded strange, but…of course, I had to give it a try. LOL! It does work, you’re right! Now that I’m testing products, I haven’t used in it in quite some time, but between rounds of hair products, I’ll give it a go again.
London, I love. It will always hold a special place in my heart as I spent my honeymoon there! We have talked about one day (we hope) having the money to return, and take our children to visit the places they see in our photos from many years ago.
Thank you for “visiting” my blog and leaving such a lovely comment! xo
