You should check out SELEXIR Peace Balm if you are looking for cruelty free skincare to soothe your irritated and sensitive skin, as well as your light to medium eczema!
SELEXIR is safe for use on adults and children. In fact, SELEXIR reports it is safe to use on babies starting at 3 months of age.
Background on SELEXIR
SELEXIR was created by Elena Herdieckerhoff, who had extremely dry, red and flaky skin. Nothing was working for her. So she set up her bathroom as a laboratory, and, after several years, Elena formulated a balm based on twenty-one natural ingredients. While this started as a self remedy, when friends and relatives, tried her balm, they too found relief!
Elena asked her friend, Mirella Messerschmitt, who had a background in the cosmetic industry, to join her to create their brand: SELEXIR.
Consider SELEXIR if your skin has any of the following:
Mild to moderate Eczema
Reactivity to cold weather/ dry air
Due to its high concentration of occlusive agents (which lock in moisture and provide a physical barrier to the skin’s water loss), skin-softening emollients, and nourishing humectants, it is very hydrating. However, while all these make it a great treatment for dry skin, it would not be appropriate for oily skin conditions!
Selexir has no parabens, paraffin, silicones, mineral oils, petroleum or synthetic dyes and fragrances.
All formulas are dermatologically proven with no known side effects, and meet the EU and US regulatory safety standards. SELEXIR products and packaging are also free from bisphenol and phthalates.
SELEXIR Peace Balm Ingredients
SELEXIR Peace Balm contains 21 natural ingredients, Serenity Seed Complex, a combination of Blackcurrant Seed Oil and Black Cumin Seed Oil.
How to use SELEXIR Peace Balm
SELEXIR is incredibly thick and rich! The balm can be applied to the face (but not to oily skin!) ears, elbows, knees, neck, hands or cracked heels. SELEXIR has received feedback from their customers that they loved using SELEXIR after shaving, waxing, and to help restore red noses after a bout of flu. People who frequently fly have written that SELEXIR helps to prevent symptoms of dry, tight skin.
I love that the SELEXIR Peace Balm is in a tube, and also that it was sealed!
The color of the balm is a pastel green, and it has a wonderful natural scent of blackcurrant, lavender and chamomile.
Before using this balm, I did as recommended, and warmed a pearl-sized amount in the palm of my hand, then massaged it into a circular motion on my clean skin. Reminder: SELEXIR is very concentrated!! As they say, a little goes a long way.
Yes, you can mix SELEXIR Peace Balm with a sunscreen; and I also found that it it did work as a great base for my make up/concealer.
SELEXIR writes, “For optimal results, we recommend at least twice daily use.” As I tested this over the past several weeks (and it’s summer here in the US) I did not reapply more than once, as I didn’t have the need.
Cons: At this time, the Balm has to be ordered through Selexir’s Shop.
I wanted to learn more about SELEXIR. The following is an interview with Elena, (Founder/CEO), from Switzerland.
There are advantages to partnering with your friend, Mirella. Want to discuss advantages/disadvantages?
There are many advantages to partnering with a close friend in a business venture. Not only does it create a friendly and pleasant work environment with a built-in support system, but you get to share all the excitement, fear, frustrations, and successes of the start-up process with someone you really care about. The road to making a dream happen is not always an easy one, but the foundation of my business partner`s and my long-lasting friendship has always seen us through the tougher times and kept our vision alive.
When working with a close friend it is crucial to respect each other as equal partners and seek to understand the other person’s needs. For instance, my business partner Mirella is a young mother and we therefore have very different daily routines. As a result, our schedules are not always in synch and we have to make an effort to keep them balanced.
What do you do when you don’t agree on a business decision?
Mirella and I have a very similar vision for our company and luckily agree on most business decisions. In the rare cases we don`t see eye to eye, we respectfully take the others opinion and ideas into consideration and talk it out until we find common denominator we both can live with. Since we both want the best for the company, we try to leave our emotions at home and make the decision on a purely analytical basis. More often than not, we discuss the issue and come up with a great compromise or a new idea altogether.
What was the scariest part about launching the SELEXIR Peace Balm?
When it comes to entrepreneurial endeavors, there’s always a lot of risk involved; turning an idea – no matter how great – into a business is always a big adventure. Every day as an entrepreneur is exciting and scary, as you never know if your hard work will pay off in the end and whether or not your product will be embraced. It is important though not to let worries take over, because to be creative, positive and optimistic always gets you- and the brand- to a better place.
You’re very inspiring to start-up companies. Any advice?
You will most likely face a lot of adversity and meet many naysayers along the way. Don`t let them get to you! First and foremost, it is crucial for you to believe in your product and stay true to yourself. Never take no for an answer and don`t necessarily believe industry experts- if you think you can and should go a different way than is “normal”, then maybe that’s how you create a new niche for yourself rather than following the industry standard. Moreover, it’s important to keep an eye on finances; expect everything to take twice as long and cost twice as much as expected. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask friends and family for help. I found that most people have a soft spot for entrepreneurial projects and will be happy to help you on your road to success.
What does SELEXIR mean?
An “elixir” is a substance believed to maintain life indefinitely and refers to the elixir of life. “Sel” is the French word for salt and is meant to represent the salt and “spice” of life. SELEXIR, as such, stands for the the essence of life, of health, and happiness.
How does one make the huge transition from producing a balm in your bathroom, to full scale production for many people?
When we decided to produce the Peace Balm on a larger scale, we were devoted to maintaining the original formula with all 21 natural ingredients. When we sought out a production facility, we naturally looked for a partner in Switzerland, because we wanted high integrity, safety and quality for our customers. Maintaining the formula proved to be a challenge though, since the top grade quality and high concentration of our ingredients was not typical by “industry norms” and so would be very expensive in production. Nonetheless, since we valued the balms efficacy above all else, we decided to maintain our formula and cut no corners, even if it meant a higher cost to us, and an elevated retail price for our customers. Thanks to this choice, we know we deliver on our promise of peaceful skin, and are happy that we chose not to make any concessions.
I know you still have the original 21 natural ingredients. Was there anything that you had to reformulate since it’s on a large scale production?
No, luckily, we were able to produce our balm without having to compromise the formula. We did slightly adapt the formula with natural preservatives just to make it viable for retail shelf life, but apart from that, it is still in its original formulation of the 21 ingredients.
Tell my readers about the two little bluebirds on your packaging?
Our company symbols, ‘the bluebirds of happiness,’ were specifically chosen to represent SELEXIR as a bringer of hope, health, rejuvenation and empowerment. The myth of the bluebird of happiness has deep roots in societies around the globe and goes back thousands of years. In sailors’ lore, this mythical creature was associated with finding one’s way, triumph in love and life, and victory in adversity. We hope to transmit these positive messages to our customers through our brand, and wish to make their SELEXIR experience an uplifting and inspiring one.
SELEXIR Peace Balm, is the first product in the SELEXIR range. What else do you have planned?
Currently we are focusing on our star product, the SELEXIR Peace Balm. In the near future, we plan to add a face and body care to the line, because our fans are already asking for more products!
Mirella and Elena’s hope is that SELEXIR brings peace to your skin. I highly recommend it, and believe that it will.
