World Kindness Day
Nov 13 is World Kindness Day, and that got me thinking that the world really could benefit from a greater amount of kindness in all sorts of ways, but one way that is close to my heart is kindness to animals.
Here on Moxie Reviews we exclusively promote cosmetics that have not been tested on animals. That’s because we believe that subjecting gentle creatures such as rabbits and mice to painful chemical toxicity tests, is just cruel and unnecessary. There is nothing beautiful about make up that has been dripped in a rabbit’s eye or forced down a rat’s throat.
World Kindness Day
So for World Kindness Day, take a moment to support the global Be Cruelty-Free campaign from Humane Society International which is working hard all over the world to end cosmetics cruelty. And they’re pretty good at it too! Cosmetics animal testing was banned in Europe in 2009 since when Be Cruelty-Free helped ensure Europe also banned the sale of cosmetics newly animal tested anywhere else in the world. Next Be Cruelty-Free India helped achieved a national ban on cosmetics animal testing, and just last week China announced it plans to phase out mandatory animal testing for cosmetics from June 2014, thanks in large part to dedicated lobbying and campaigning by Be Cruelty-Free China.
And they’re not done yet. Be Cruelty-Free Brazil has submitted a detailed proposal to the government calling for a national ban on cosmetics animal testing – did you know in Brazil they still test cosmetics on animals’ genitals?! Things have got to change, and fast! And Be Cruelty-Free New Zealand has a similar campaign going asking their Prime Minister John Key to “hop to it” and ban animal testing already!
Russia, South Korea, Canada, Australia, Japan all have Be Cruelty-Free campaigns running by HSI, and their sister group the Humane Society of the United States is leading Be Cruelty-Free USA. Phew! Talk about global action for animals.
Why do they do what they do? Because testing cosmetics on animals causes unnecessary suffering for untold numbers of creatures. And what’s more, non-animal alternative tests offer far more reliable, cutting-edge science solutions than overdosing rodents with vast quantities of chemicals or sticking them in their eyes to see what happens.
HSI’s Be Cruelty-Free pledge says that all cosmetics should be cruelty-free, and we agree! Too often companies hide behind the claim that they only test on animals when required by law. But with the exception of China – and that looks set to change soon – there really are very few laws that explicitly require cosmetics to be animal tested. What they really mean is that they want to continue using “new-to-the-world” chemistries, ingredients that haven’t existed before, because that’s what gives them market advantage and the cosmetics industry really is all about profit. For those new ingredients there won’t be any existing safety data on record, and whilst non-animal tests are being developed all the time – and when they’re created they outstrip animal tests – there are still some test gaps. And those test gaps have to be filled with new animal testing.
The truth is that every cosmetic company has a choice whether or not to test on animals simply by making intelligent and compassionate choices about the ingredients they use. If being kind to animals is more important than your profit margin, being cruelty-free is the only choice you need to make.
There is a lot of animal suffering in the world, that’s for sure. But campaigns like HSI’s Be Cruelty-Free make me feel hopeful for the future because they show just what we can achieve by combining consumer campaigning with lobbying expertise and scientific know-how. HSI says its aim is to create a world where no animal has to suffer and die for the sake of cosmetics. And with a little help from us, I think they just might do it too!
