Shimmer Blush Recipe: Comp Chick’s Guide DIY Beauty

Shimmer Blush Recipe

The Shimmer Blush Recipe is being reprinted on Moxie Reviews with special permission from the publisher of Sunny Subramanian’s beautiful book, The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty: 125 Recipes for Vegan, Gluten-Free, Cruelty-Free Makeup, Skin and Hair Care Products.

Sunny was the very first vegan beauty blogger to make a name for herself. In addition to being a super mom, and now an author, she’s also been a very kind person to yours truly…way back, when I first started 5 years ago! Because of that willingness to help a blogger out, Sunny made sure that I received a complimentary copy of her above mentioned book. The shimmer blush recipe is one of the 125 recipes in the book. I’ve done a several posts including a full review of the book, and then tried a few of the easy to follow recipes: Pore Shrinking Basil Toner and a Strawberry Natural Tooth Recipe.

Now, it’s time to share the (obviously) vegan shimmer blush recipe from the expert herself, Sunny!
“It’s time to talk about your sweet cheeks (the ones upstairs, not your hindquarters). Using blush is a fabulous way to appear youthful and healthy, and this natural option rocks at rosying up your complexion”
The shimmer blush recipe is best for: ♥ all skin types

Top Tip: Make sure your beet root powder is super-duper finely ground, and then grind it some more in a blender. The finer it is, the better it’ll adhere to your skin.

Superstar ingredient:
Beets contain high levels of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and micronutrients. Red beets also contain a pigment called betanin, which gives them their bright magenta coloring. In addition to using beet root powder to make blush, you can also use it as natural food coloring.

  • Makeup sifter jar

1 tsp        finely ground beet root powder, alkanet root powder or
hibiscus flower powder 5 mL

1⁄2 tsp     arrowroot powder                          2 mL

1⁄4 tsp     unsweetened cocoa powder        1 mL

Pinch       gold mica powder                         Pinch

3 to 5       drops lavender essential oil        3 to 5

  1. Pour beet root powder into a small bowl. Whisk in arrowroot powder and cocoa powder, a little at a time, until desired shade is achieved. Discard any remaining arrowroot powder and cocoa powder.
  2. Whisk in mica powder and lavender essential oil until well combined. Pour into jar.
  3. Sprinkle blush onto a fluffy blush brush and apply to cheeks.
  4. Store at room temperature for up to 6 months.

Variation of Shimmer Blush Recipe–Matte Blush: Omit gold mica for
a matte finish.

NARS Special Edition Orgasm Blush

NARS Special Edition Orgasm Blush

NARS, the cruelty free company has issued the original blush in a limited-edition oversized custom compact: NARS Special Edition Orgasm Blush. It is a very pretty peachy pink shade, and is designed to be universally flattering.

Check it out:

NARS Special Edition Orgasm Blush

When François Nars launched the NARS orgasm blush back in 1999, it became the #1 selling blush in the United States. Now the original blush is being offered in a limited-edition oversized custom compact.

The Special Edition Orgasm Blush was designed in collaboration with Fabien Baron of Baron & Baron.  The oversized compact features a special NARS logo, a model visual and a #whatmakesyoublush hashtag that is etched on the mirror.

The NARS Special Edition Orgasm Blush is priced at $39.00 and is a now at NARS Boutiques and narscosmetics.com. It will also be available June 1 at Sephora and other speciality and department stores.
Just a note that NARS is a subsidiary of  Shiseido, which is not cruelty free. Unfortunately, it’s become the norm that the little brands get bought out by the giants in the industry. However, if I can verify, through asking the company myself, that they are still cruelty free,  then I will continue to support NARS. I do not rely on lists, because I don’t know how often they are updated.

Disclosure: I have nothing to disclose.

Milani Coming Up Roses: Thoughts

The Warm Petal Blush has a little bit of shimmer, which is nice.  The Warm Petals is just as advertised. It is a silky-soft powder and it applied very nicely onto my cheeks.  I found that it was very pigmented–although you can wear it more sheer depending on your preference. I applied the Warm Petals blush early in the morning, and it stayed put for at least eight hours.

With this color, it would be excellent for contouring or for a bronzer, in addition, to simply being used as a blush.

Loved that this brown blush had a little shimmer in it and that the formula is terrific; and, again, you can’t beat that price of $6.49 for .60 ounces!

True Beauty Box Cruelty Free Skin Care & Cosmetics

True Beauty Box

I’m really excited to share with you the newest True Beauty Box. The review of the previous Box can be found at this link: True Beauty Box Cruelty Free Cosmetics & Skin Care

True Beauty Box

True Beauty Box is for you if…

True Beauty Box is for you if you love to try different natural and cruelty free cosmetics and skin care!  This monthly service launched in December of 2012. Unlike other beauty boxes, where you may or may not receive items that are cruelty free, Love True Natural is the company that is running the True Beauty Box. Love True Natural is a 100% natural and cruelty free beauty company.

While I strongly recommend that everyone always double-check, True Beauty Box does guarantee that all of the products that members receive in their True Beauty Box will be free of Parabens, PEG, Phthalates, Petrochemicals, and synthetic colors.

Every month the True Beauty Box will contain three to four FULL size products, (this month there are four), plus you will receive samples.  In addition, True Beauty Box members will have exclusive access to sales and special prices on the Love True Natural website.

It starts by completing a beauty profile quiz at www.truebeautybox.com, and then choosing the style of box you want (Flirt, Veganista, or Indulge). After the quiz you simply submit the information, and your box will arrive soon.

As a member, you will receive a “sneak peak” of each beauty profile on the 12th of each month. True Beauty Box strives to make you happy, and they want to make certain that you’re going to love what you receive.  Therefore, you not only don’t have to make a commitment, but each month you have the option to re-take the beauty quiz for a different beauty profile and box style. Of course, there is also the option to skip, or cancel by the 15th of each month. The only thing that you need to remember is that after the initial charge (for your first Box), you will automatically be charged on the 16th of each month if you do not notify them.

Of the three options, Flirt and Veganista are both currently $30; Indulge is $40. The Beauty Box that I received is as follows:

True Beauty Box with Benecos Natural Baked Colour Eyeshadow

Benecos eyeshadow

The gluten free eyeshadow in Chocolate is gorgeous! The formula is really smooth, and that’s because the organic plant oils provide a creamy application. You can apply the eyeshadow wet or dry, depending on the effect you want. Since they are baked, Benecos writes that their mineral shadow won’t crumble or shatter.

Benecos eyeshadow

I love the sparkles. I think it’s just the right amount for a nice elegant look. I used eye shadow primer and the eye shadow stayed put, even with a trip to the gym (see the end of the post for picture).

True Beauty Box with Benecos Natural Kajal Eye Liner

Benecos eyeliner

This is a gluten free, matte black kohl pencil that is nice and creamy, and I had no trouble with thick or thin lines. It’s no surprise, since they are formulated with organic plant oils and pure minerals. Use along upper and lower lash lines.

Benecos eye liner pencils are safe for those who wear contact lenses. I applied primer on my eyelids, and this eye liner lasted– even with a trip to the gym (see photo at the end of the post).

True Beauty Box with Benecos Maximum Length Mascara

This gluten free mascara is in the color carbon black.

Benecos mascara

This naturally hydrating Super Long Lash Mascara adds length and carbon black tone to lashes without any chemicals. With Vitamin E.

 Benecos mascara

I liked that the mascara did add some length to my lashes, and I liked the wand. Here’s a swatch of the black color:

The mascara is made with organic Jojoba, sunflower oils, and Vitamin E for hydration. I wore the mascara to the gym and the photo is at the end of the post.

True Beauty Box with Benecos Baked Blush

This gluten free, mineral blush is baked for color so that it lasts. The ingredients of Cupuau butter and Sacha Inchi oil will keep skin hydrated and provide anti-aging benefits.

I received coral, one of the two colors that the blush is available in:

 Benecos blush

The shimmery coral color is recommended for fair to medium skin tones.

Here is a great visual from Love True Natural for how to apply:

rouge

Round Face Shape

Apply directly to the cheek bones as flat as possible.

rouge square

Square Face Shape

Apply the rouge between the hairline and cheeks. To begin at the far end of the cheek bone, apply the rouge in one stroke down gently and run out to leave the temples. So the distinctive shape of the face looks softer.

rouge oval

Oval Face Shape

Apply the rouge near the top approximatelly at the level of the temples and run diagonally to the corners of the mouth down. This gives the face more contour.

rouge

Heart Face Shape

Begin in the middle of the cheeks: Apply blush and run out from there to the temples.

I decided to put the mascara, eyeshadow and eyeliner to the test. I worked out at the gym and this is the after shot:
