The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

I received a complimentary review copy of The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty, and I can’t wait to tell you about it.   I have already started to read the copy that was sent to me. I first showed it off on Instagram.

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

Sunny Subramanian was the very first vegan beauty blogger to make a name for herself. Now, this super mom and super blogger is an author! Great bragging rights, Sunny! This beautiful book has the complete title: The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty: 125 Recipes for Vegan, Gluten-Free, Cruelty-Free Makeup, Skin and Hair Care Products.

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

Before I charge ahead about the book, let me tell you some more about this compassionate chick, Sunny. Back in 2007, Sunny became the very first vegan beauty blogger, and now she’s the leading authority on cruelty free and vegan beauty and lifestyle. I’m sure you already know this, but I’ll repeat it for those living under a rock. Sunny’s blog is veganbeautyreview, and her goal with both her blog and her book is to, “show the world that veganism can be fun, beautiful, and delicious.”

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

Part One of The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty is the “Ins and Outs of Vegan Beauty.” That includes: Vegan Basics, Why DIY Beauty Products are Better, and Essential Vegan Ingredients and Equipment. This is chock-full of all the information you need in one handy guide.

You’re reading my blog, so obviously, you already know that sadly, in 2016, there are still so many cosmetics that are tested on and/or contain animal products. One of the many reasons that I love Sunny’s book is because in Part Two not only are there are only cruelty free, vegan and non-toxic recipes–but also, if gluten in cosmetics is a concern to you, you need not worry. All of them are gluten free! Sunny has made sure not to leave anyone out, since although it’s a “chick’s guide,” there are also recipes for unisex beauty essentials.  There are 125 recipes in total, and I bet that anything that you have considered making will be in this book.

In wanting to give a thorough review, I’ve not only been reading Sunny’s beautiful book, but I’ve also been taking the time to make the recipes. My photos and thoughts on trying to make the recipes (letting you know how easy, or very easy) they were to make, will be in future posts.

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

Here are some more things you need to know about the The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty:

All of the recipes are written with very clear, step-by-step directions. Most of them have photos for each step, too. All of the recipes have a note as to whom the product is best for, and tips and possible cautions (in case you may be allergic to an ingredient, etc.). There are over 100 color photos, and helpful charts and diagrams. There is also a gift section, an ingredient list and their beneficial properties, and a very large vegan resources section.

I love that in the title of the book the word Compassionate is used. While I’m sure that those who want to end animal cruelty will want to purchase the book, I hope that other people, whether they are a vegetarian, or a fully committed vegan, will also get this go-to resource!

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty: 125 Recipes for Vegan, Gluten-Free, Cruelty-Free Makeup, Skin and Hair Care Products is available in bookstores and online at Amazon.com!

St. Patrick’s Day Nail Art

St. Patrick’s Day Nail Art

St. Patrick’s Day Nail Art– after St. Patrick’s Day! What?  There’s a logical reason, if somewhat ridiculous story. Loondontown, the cruelty free, vegan, and gluten free nail polish, very generously sent three bottles of their Lakur for a possible review/nail art post. It was sent to me via a global carrier serice on March 4. We kept tracking the package, and to make a long story short, the Londontown Lakur was finally located, and delivered to me, by one of the managers (in his own pickup truck) shortly before 8pm on…you guessed it, St. Patrick’s Day!

Here is a photo of the gorgeous Londowntown Lakur that I used for my St. Patrick’s Day nail art:

SANTE Nail Polish Review & Photos

SANTE Nail Polish

SANTE Nail Polish, which is not only cruelty free, but also vegan and gluten free, was sent for review. Every Sante Nail Polish is identified by number, located on the bottom of each 7 mL clear glass bottle. I have No. 01: French Clear, No. 02: French White, No. 15: red, and No. 20, an aubergine black. Here is a photo of all of the available Sante Nail Polish:

Sante Nail Polish

Sante Nail Polish is excellent! I’m not a nail blogger and all of the polish that was sent was easy to work with. They are all, as advertised, very rich in color and very shiny before even applying a top coat. The polish is quick to dry, and lasted several days without having any chips. Sante points out that while their nail polish is not water based, (it’s a solvent base), it is made without Dibutyl Pthalate, Toluene and Formaldehyde, colophony (rosin), synthetic preservatives, and synthetic fragrances.

Keep reading to see the swatches!
