Siobhan O’Connor: No More Dirty Looks Book and Interview

Question: How nervous was I (Moxie) when I emailed Siobhan O’Connor, a co-author of No More Dirty Looks book to ask if she would agree to be interviewed?

Answer: Very. I’m not a writer by profession; it was intimidating because Siobhan:

*is an Author: No More Dirty Looks Book

*has two positions at Prevention Magazine (read the interview to find out more)

*Plus! She blogs with her co-author, Alexandra Spunt, of No More Dirty Looks

Siobhan and her co-author, Alexandra Spunt

Siobhan, let me make sure that I, (and the rest of your fans), correctly pronounce your name. Is it “Shiv-awn”?

Yes! Though I’ve had my name mispronounced since French immersion school as a kid so I pretty much answer to anything, including the half dozen different nicknames I’ve been given over the years.

Were you always writing when you were growing up?

Yep. My mom recently reminded me that I was first published when I was about 6, for a poem I wrote about a kid making up fanciful stories to avoid going to sleep.  I also started a paper with friends in the fifth grade and did zines in high school. Aside from a brief and ill-fated stint as an ice cream girl, this is mostly all I’ve ever done.

Any particular types of stories that were your favorite to write?

The book (No More Dirty Looks) is the project I am most proud of because it was collaborative and felt really important. Working with Alexandra, or Alie as I call her, continues to be a major source of pleasure for me. I also wrote for years for music magazines, and I still do. Beyond that? I reported on and off for a few years about public housing in Chicago. I forget about that sometimes, but my boyfriend asked me about it recently, and it reminded me how important it was, and is, to me.

The work I love to do most adds, I would hope anyway, to people’s understanding of things that hide in plain sight. Cosmetics and social issues both fit that bill. Rap music, less so. But the impulse, believe it or not, is the same.

Siobhan and Alexandra

I purchased and reviewed: No More Dirty Looks.

What inspired you to have a career as a writer?

I like telling stories. I like digging in to things and sharing what I find. I am very curious. But for me what matters most is what the end game is: sharing what I have found. It’s also why I love editing. My writers do things I never could and I admire the hell out of them for it. I also get to learn so much about things I might not otherwise do a deep dive on. I feel lucky for that.

In college, were people always asking you to help them with their writing assignments?

Ha! Not really. I didn’t have a typical college experience. I took time off between my first year at University of Toronto before coming to Columbia, and then I did that while working at magazines, which was hard! I had no school friends and eventually left without finishing. Truth is, too, that a lot of my friends are writers or editors as well. We read each other’s work.

What was your first paid writing assignment?

I don’t even remember! But my first feature was a story I pitched to the alternative weekly I worked at, when I was 18 or 19, called the Montreal Mirror. It was about furries — people who dress up as and/or identify as animals. These were teenagers living with their parents who spent most of their time online, before most of us even had an AOL address, and they were terrified of getting caught. It was fascinating and hard, and I felt lucky that they opened up as much as they did.

What is your position at Prevention Magazine?

I’m senior editor of the print magazine, working on environment stories, mental health, and alternative health. I am also deputy editor of the web site, which I am over the moon about.

How do you dress when you go to work?

Skinny Jeans, men’s shirts, loose tops, chunky boots or high heels, little fun dresses. It’s pretty casual when you work in magazines, thank goodness. I do love dressing up though.

On the weekends?

A nightie or yoga clothes? Haha. If I’m going out, it’s variations on the work looks. If I’m going out-out I like cool dresses, short but not hoochie, skirts with tights, skinny jeans with a fun top.

Do you have time to read for pleasure? Favorite books/authors?

For sure. Favorites are predictable: Joan Didion, James Joyce, Nabokov. The last novel I read was Eugenides’ The Marriage Plot, which I quite liked! The last nonfiction book I read was a Buddhist text by Trungpa. I’m almost done with a new book, out this spring, about the hormone oxytocin by Paul Zak. Fascinating!

Beauty Celebrities & Holiday Plans!

Moxie Dogs for Moxie Reviews

Jennifer Matthews: My holiday plans include traveling to Louisiana with my boyfriend to see my family and giving away lots of cruelty free beauty products to my family and friends!  https://www.twitter.com/mybeautybunny

Beauty Brains: “Sarah Bellum can’t wait for Santa to bring her the new small barrel InStyler (leopard print version) so she can start wearing her hair curly; The Right Brain is really excited to see if the new Colgate Optic White toothpaste will remove red wine stains from all those holiday cocktail parties; and the Left Brain will be looking at peer-reviewed scientific journals trying to find proof that Santa Claus doesn’t really exist. (What a Grinch!)  Cheers! Right Brain” https://www.twitter.com/thebeautybrains

Siobhan O’Connor: “I’m going to split my time between Montreal, where I’m from, and Brooklyn, where I’ve lived for 10 years. Both are home to me, but I am especially excited to head up north for a few days. Montreal is always so cold and snowy around Christmas, which is just how I like it–and it’ll be great to see my parents, my brother, my sister in law and my two beautiful twin nieces. I also love New York when it empties out, so I’m excited to come back here for a few days, too!” https://www.twitter.com/NoDirtyLooks

Alexandra Spunt: We’re going to rest, eat, play in the snow, and hang with family and friends in our hometown of Montreal. Hopefully we’ll get to have a little quality time together too, since we’re usually on opposite coasts! https://www.twitter.com/@NoDirtyLooks

Vanessa  Gualy: “I’ll be enjoying the holidays with all the good stuff in life- family, friends and delicious food!” (Co-Founder)https://www.twitter.com/nailinghwood

Tameka Linnell:  Usually, we head out to Colorado to ski for the holidays, but this year we’ve decided to take a break from the hectic holiday travel and stay put in sunny South Florida. (not the worst place to spend the holiday…just ask the snow birds who flock down here from up north!)

My plans are pretty simple.  I want to spend unadulterated time with my two beautiful kids and my amazing husband.   I’m excited to slow down my pace and just relax and listen to the kids run around the house, go to the beach, go for bike rides without having to check my e-mail every minute or hop on a call.  Lately, I’ve been going through cooking magazines dog-earring pages of great holiday recipes to make during the holiday break.  I’m a working mom, so it’s fun to put the hat on of the mom in the kitchen cooking amazing meals.  (I do cook most every night, but only meals that take 30 min, MAX!)  This holiday season, I want my house to smell like my house did when I was a kid.  Yummy aromas wafting from the kitchen.  The smell of things roasting or cookies and cakes baking.  I’m going to watch the Dora Explorer special on Sunday evening with my daughter who is completely enamored with Dora:-)  I’m going to go to read 5 chapters to my son at night instead of the two that we usually only have time for because of the mad bedtime routine rush.

I’m also going to take time to do things for myself.  Maybe get a massage AND a pedicure.  I’m going to go paddle boarding with my husband.  I’m going to go for a run at 10AM instead of 5:30AM.  You get the point.  This holiday season, I don’t just want to think about things that are important, I want to live out all those experiences with my loved ones.  I’m excited to just slow down and re-connect and re-charge. Oh, and one last thing.  My husband thinks I’m crazy, but I’m REALLY looking forward to taking more silly pics with my new instant camera:-) https://www.twitter.com/ItsJOON

Ruth Crilly: (New Year’s Eve) I shall be watching over Ted the kitten, I should think – he’s too small to leave alone so we will no doubt be warm and cosy by the fire! https://www.twitter.com/modelrecommends

Dr. Adrienne Denese: “I have a very important show on QVC right after Xmas on Dec 28th at 4am. Therefore I will not travel anywhere over the holidays to make sure that I do not catch a cold, do not catch the flu, etc. before this very important occasion. So I will be grounded in a way. I will be studying for the shows diligently over Xmas. It is not much fun but we all have to make sacrifices.” https://www.twitter.com/DrDenese

Ms. Furless, from Furless Makeup Brushes & Accessories, would like to wish everyone a very lovely Christmas! https://twitter.com/_FURLESS_

Melissa Croland:  I will be spinning the dreidel  and lighting Hanukkah candles with my wonderful boyfriend.  After the Festival of Lights comes to an end, we will be heading to Fess Parker Winery to visit their tasting room, spa and a gallop around the vineyard on horseback New Year’s Day.  I will definitely be ringing in 2012 wearing Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics!  https://www.twitter.com/ybcosmetics

Indie Lee: “We are spending the holidays at home with our family and friends.  We’ve hosted this for the past 8 years.  It’s basically like a big open house.  I come from a mix religious background, which is awesome and this year Hanukah and Christmas overlap.  I’m excited to light the menorah at our holiday party with our family and friends.  This year we decided not to spend that much time in the kitchen (OK I never really did) and we are continuing with the Hors d’oeuvres theme.  Everyone loves and eats the apps and then never the big meal – so let’s just skip the big meal and eat all the fun stuff.

Gifts this year is also very cool…We all have enough stuff, so many people have nothing. So we are giving the gift of giving.  We are buying gift cards for various denominations that the recipient can log on to the website and decide which charity they feel passionate about and can go to.  It’s a win win.  Brilliant!  I feel so good about this choice.

My kids on the other hand have decided that rather then gifts this year, we are taking a family trip to Disney and Harry Potter world at Universal.” https://twitter.com/Indie_Lee

Richard Merrill: I am hosting a Few Holiday Spa shopping Parties throughout So. Cal. & then Dec 21-28, I will be visiting Family in San Diego to celebrate my sister’s birthday and Christmas https://www.twitter.com/RichardMerrill

Angel Kirk: Enjoying this special time of the year with my Family! I just love our family Christmas get- togethers and of course..all the good food! https://www.twitter.com/MrsAKirk

Abbey Allen: “This holiday I look forward to watching my one-year old daughter open her presents from Santa and take off all the ornaments on the low branches of the Christmas tree at my parents’ house!  And I’ll be wearing my Winks at the holiday parties and on NYE at the beach!” https://www.twitter.com/GeorgieBeauty

Megan Allen: “I can’t wait to have a hot toddy by the fire with friends and family!  That is after a full day of shopping, of course!  My sister and I also have a tradition of delivering Santa gifts to a family in need on Christmas Eve, which is what it’s all about.  That is always the highlight of our holiday.”  https://www.twitter.com/GeorgieBeauty

N.K. (She’s so famous, she doesn’t need to give out any more info. than her initials!) I love to drive around with my 90 lb. puppy and check out those disconcertingly tasteful lights before parking on Montana Avenue in the tony neighbourhood of Brentwood and watch the theatrical tidings of streetside caroling. It’s going to be a quiet, contemplative holiday season set to some brassy, swinging holiday music as I gear up for some major changes in 2012. The revelry of solitude will be punctuated by mid morning jaunts to my local shelter, where I always hand out good tokens of cheer to spread the good karma forward https://www.twitter.com/beautyhuile

Kim Paschen: I am headed to Wisconsin to visit family for 5 days. I’ll also be going to the Packers-Bears football game on the eve of Christmas Day! http://www.twitter.com/LeapingBunny

Hope Gillerman: ”Found a cabin upstate with a cat and a fireplace to hang with friends and family for a few days. Includes a stop at Mohonk Mountain House Spa for “Breathe Deep and Be Well”-my favorite rejuvenating treatment- w/ HGO Chest & Sinus Remedy. Can’t wait!!!!!!” http://www.twitter.com/HopeGillerman

Barbara Brekke:   There are a few things I can count on happening every Christmas:
1.  Enjoying a dinner out with my husband and family on Christmas Eve;
2.  Spending Christmas Day with my husband’s family;
3.  And Youngblood goodies under the tree!

Renee Lynn Smith: My plans for the holidays will be pretty calm. I will be focusing on the finer things in life. Catching up with friends and family and exploring the city that I live in. I love NYC this time of year. It has such a magical vibe. During the year my job is so hectic with all the traveling I do, that this is the time of year that I treasure the most. Its nice to be home, I definitely have plans to see the movie “My week with Marilyn”. Unfortunately I don’t have any New Year’s plans yet but I am definitely looking forward to the year a head. Bare Escentuals will be having one of our biggest skin care launches yet. In January we will be releasing our new Active Cell Renewal Serum. I can’t even begin to explain how amazing my skin felt after trying this. We will be having several events surrounding this launch in the beginning of January. Stay tuned!  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Renee-Lynn-Smith-NYC-MAKE-UP-Artist/218363144859471

Summer Hair Challenge!

I entered the Summer Hair Challenge, which was run by the website: No More Dirty Looks: The Truth about Your Beauty Products–and the Ultimate Guide to Safe and Clean Cosmetics. The book, written by Siobhan O’ Connor and Alexandra Spunt, is one that I previously reviewed here, on my site, and continue to reference. (Past review)

When I saw a post about a Hair Care Challenge, I was all over it. Plus, as the infomercials would say, “But Wait…there’s More!…” Yes, here’s what @Nodirtylooks wrote:

“This year we’re offering some extra incentive too: A brain-meltingly good haircare basket courtesy of NuboNau. The winner—who will be chosen at random—will get products from Rahua, John Masters, and Intelligent Nutrients. Worth the price of admission, wouldn’t you agree?”

Why, yes, of course, I agree!

Here were the rules and instructions: “Some time in the next few days, when you get up in the morning, shower, shampoo and condition your hair using nontoxic natural products, comb it when you get out of the shower, and that’s it. No leave-ins, no heat. Once it’s dry, send us a pic. No sneaking in a little blast from the dryer on your roots, no irons, no natural leave-ins, and certainly no toxic ones. Naked hair, air-dried.”

Instructions: As we said above, you have to get it wet, whether you use shampoo and conditioner or both or neither is up to you. You can use a brush or a pick, obviously. Once your hair is dry, take a pic with your phone or computer or whatever and send it to us at nomoredirtylooks (at) gmail (dot) com with HAIR CHALLENGE in the subject line.”

Why is No More Dirty Looks doing this challenge:  ”We all wage war with our hair on a semiregular basis trying to make it look some other way than it does naturally, and hey, nothing wrong with that. We do it too. But we also want to see what happens when we switch to nontoxic, nonstripping products, and then leave our manes alone.”

Moxie followed the directions: Naked hair, air-dried. Here’s my picture:

Why am I OK with how my air-dried, naked hair looks? I believe it’s because I always make sure to get regular trims from my hair stylist. Let me preface my personal comments with this full disclosure:  I am not a hair stylist.

I listen to what countless articles, shows, and my own stylist recommends.

On average, hair grows one half inch, every four weeks.

I like the length of my hair, (as seen in the photo), and therefore every six to eight weeks I have it trimmed to maintain it at that length.

By scheduling haircuts on a regular basis, I have been told that it helps to keep my hair not only healthy, but strong. Anything additional that someone does to their hair (be it coloring or perms, etc.) *may* cause hair to become dry or have split ends, and that would require more frequent trims.

For the record, I do not perm my hair. I actually used to, in the early 90′s, and let’s just say…fortunately I am not a star, as my picture would be featured in one of those “What was she thinking?” Uh-huh,  Hip? Of course, I thought so. Looking back. Not. At. All.

My non-professional advice? Find, or continue to go regularly to a stylist you feel comfortable talking to;  you and he/she  need to be on the same page with what you want the length of your hair to be, what style you want, and how much time you have to devote to a morning hair routine.
All entries for the Summer Hair Challenge had to be in by the 21st of August, but hopefully they will run it again next year.  Pictures of all the entrants’ hair will be posted at  No More Dirty Looks. This year’s “randomly chosen” winner has not as yet been announced, but Moxie will keep you posted.

Moxie’s Top Ten Award

I’m thrilled! I just received my first blogger award. Know how you see some blogs with awards plastered all over their site? Yes, well, that’s not my website. :-) So, you can imagine my excitement!! Here’s a huge thank you to the blogger from whom I received this award:  Laura. To use her words, Laura is “a cosmetics junkie.”   Wow. kind of makes you wonder how we became friends, huh?! :-)  Laura’s blog is: My Newest Addiction. Here is a link so you can see why I have been a follower of her blog: http://mynewestaddiction.blogspot.com. She’s also a Facebook friend! The rules are that I must link back to the person/people who tagged me, (that would be Laura) and now I need to nominate 10 other bloggers, who will list their favorite 10 products.

Here’s my award: Also exciting: my favorite color is purple!

Without further ado, here is Moxie’s List of her TEN FAVORITE PRODUCTS:

1. Joon’s Natural Beauty Body Wash both my daughter and I love!! Here is my previous review: Joon’s Natural Beauty Body Wash.  I would like to share this funny exchange with my teenage daughter. After deciding that she absolutely loved the Joon products that I purchased, she insisted that I not use them. “Mom, I thought you said I was the Joon Girl?! Would you *please* leave the Joon products for the Joon Girl, then?! Come on!” I’m sure that Ms. Tameka Linell, Co-Founder/VP Marketing at JOON Skincare, would not object to Moxie awarding her daughter the honorary title of, Joon Girl.

(Joon’s website also includes a monthly contest to be a Joon Girl. A Joon Girl is a girl who, “Doesn’t sit around waiting for something to happen to her. She is out there embracing the world making things happen and making positive changes for herself and the world around her….”  I like it! A Joon Girl has Moxie!! )

Following up on my daughter’s request to get my hands off her Joon products, I needed to find something that I, and the rest of my family, could use. That leads me to:

2. I purchased 100% PURE COCOA KONA HYDRATING BODY WASH  (All Natural, 100% Vegetarian, Gluten free), and my family highly recommends it, although I have not done a “formal” review of it. It’s a huge bottle, (Net wt. 17 oz/502 ml, and I paid $15. 100% PURE shower gels do not contain water, gums, thickeners, or emulsifiers.  The Cocoa Kona fragrance smells absolutely wonderful; and it produces a really nice foam. Check out the big bars of chocolate pictured on their label. (Affiliate link added: 9-8-11)

Check out this wonderful statement that 100% PURE has on their website:

“We love animals and refuse to support anything that hurts animals which is why none of our formulas are ever tested on animals (everything we use is food grade and does not require testing, whereas chemical ingredients must be tested). All our makeup brushes are from synthetic fibers. No animals were hurt for their fur and no animals were hurt for any of our ingredients (the only animal ingredient we use is cruelty free honey).”

3. miessence foaming HAND SOAP (their name is not capitalizedis certified organic. Lavish Organics – Certified Organic Products  www.lavishorganics.com were very generous, and sent a sample to me. Terrific product, and I highly recommend it; in addition, it’s refillable, too! All the ingredients in miessence’s certified organics line of products are safe, and, they are even safe enough to eat–but, of course, snack on something else instead All of miessence’s products use only certified organic cold-pressed and unrefined oils and therapeutic grade herb and flower extracts.  In addition, the products are cold-formulated so oils are never exposed to damaging heat.

4. I have made no secret of the fact that I love SIRCUIT® Cosmeceuticals products. Even after I reviewed their products: Sircuit® Cosmeceuticals Youth Accelerator Pumpkin Enzyme Peel and Can an oil-free bronzer give you a golden glow? I continued to go back to their website to check out what else I might be needing! As it turns out, I read the description for their X-TRAP  Daily Gentle Face Wash, and made a note that it would be a product that I would certainly order when I was finished with the facial cleanser that I had recently purchased based on the recommendation by my dermatologist. I can’t even recall what prompted me to look at the list of ingredients in this aforementioned cleanser. I’m fairly certain I was looking to see how much longer I would have to go before I could try SIRCUIT’s cleanser.

The good and bad news is as follows. I had plenty of product left in the cleanser recommended by the dermatologist. The bad news is that there were several ingredients on the “blacklist” from wonderful book I previously reviewed, No More Dirty LooksThe Truth About Your Beauty Products and the Ultimate Guide to Safe and Clean Cosmetics.

Well, that was quite a shock, so don’t assume that just because it’s doctor recommended that it has all the ingredients that you do/do not want in a product. I called SIRCUIT® Cosmeceuticals’ toll-free phone number, as any customer can and should do, and had a free personalized skin consultation with Todd Edmiston, who is  the Retail Sales Coordinator. After that consultation I purchased the X-TRAP  Daily Gentle Face Wash in the full size (4 oz.), which is $38.00. Since then, I have been using it twice a day and my face looks great!

5. I continue to use and recommend Sigma Beauty’s, Cleansing & Polishing Tool. Here is the link for my website to read: An Interview with Simone & Sigma’s New Cleansing & Polishing Tool Review . I paid $39.00 plus $8.60 for USPS Priority Shipping. It’s extremely effective at exfoliation/polishing; I not only could feel that my skin felt smoother, but I also noticed that the polishing process did help my moisturizer to absorb better/faster.  In addition, since my skin was so smooth, and my moisturizer was so completely absorbed into my skin, I then had the perfect base to apply makeup products.  The Cleansing & Polishing Tool is reasonably priced, and very effective,

6. My next favorite product is: Aromafloria’s Aromatherapy, AromaRemedy Salt Glow Body Scrub. This is a product which I was lucky enough to not only receive a sample of, but the company, Aromafloria, had a contest in which some of the Readers of Moxie Reviews™ were able to win a free product. The full review is here, and what I continue to appreciate about the product is that I am able to quickly buff away rough skin with a circular motion; and it gently exfoliates. Easy, and I have instant results of very smooth skin, with a nice scent. This, of course, is perfect to use before I use the next favorite product on my list:

7. SIRCUIT® Cosmeceuticals’ faux sun, Sircuit Soliel,  a firming mineral self bronzer. I received a 4 ml Acrylic Pot Sample, which is $6.50 to review, and the full review is here: Can an oil-free bronzer give you a golden glow?. The sample of the mineral self bronzer so impressed me, that I purchased the full-size product, 4oz. / 120 ml for $48.00.  As you can see from the photo, the full size has a terrific pump! Of course, this product does not contain artificial colors, fragrance, preservatives, and, as a requirement of being reviewed, is cruelty free.

8. I’m an unwavering fan of Josie Maran Cosmetics’ products. In fact, my first review was on Josie Maran’s Argan Oil. My previous reviews are:  Josie Maran’s Limited Edition Argan Oil Eyeshadow Quad and Josie Maran’s Bear Naked Wipes Review. I have purchased all of these products. I have tweeted and written on Facebook more than once, “I stockpile Argan OiI,” in response to the company’s question to name our favorite product. I have photographed Josie’s 100% Pure Argan Oil Luxury Size, 4 fl oz for $96, and I also snuck in the To Go size (purchased through QVC) and Josie’s Argan Oil Hair Serum 2 fl oz. for $30.

9. Lavanila Laboratories The Healthy Baby Block with SPF 40  and LAVANILA LABORATORIES. Purchased both terrific sunscreens for the family, and I’m so glad that I did. Not once has someone gotten even a little red from the sun. Need I say more?!

10. NEW Bare Escentuals Pretty Amazing Lip Color Review color purchasedMoxie–but of course! Now, I did not put that on the list just because it has my name, which is an added bonus. I really do love the color. Also, I wasn’t allowed to “bend” the rules and add a #11 to the list. That would have been a bareMinerals product that I’m currently completing a review for. :-) So, back to Moxie Lip Color. With eight shades, and Moxie telling you that it is a very creamy lip color, that give my lips a beautiful shine, you too would find one you wanted to purchase.

Previously I have purchased two of their eye shadow colors, and here is a link to that review: Buxom Stay-There Eye Shadow. I have also posted a great New York Times article on my website, Move Over, Estée Lauder, which is all about Leslie Blodgett, the chief executive of Bare Escentuals.

No More Dirty Looks Book Review

No More Dirty Looks Book! The full title is No More Dirty Looks Book: The Truth About Your Beauty Products and the Ultimate Guide to Safe and Clean Cosmetics, published by De Capo Press, 2010, is a book that was written by two journalists, Alexandra Spunt and Siobhan O’Connor. No suspense here for this review. I bought the book and highly recommend it! When you’re done reading it, pass it on to other members of your family, friends, or suggest it as the next book to read for your Book Group. And make sure you tell them it’s important that they read it.

Why? Most people simply do not think about all the ingredients in the products that they use, buy for their family to use, or even recommend to others. That means they are not considering their exposure to the many chemicals that get absorbed into skin. Ms. Spunt and Ms. O’Connor write about all the “dirty ingredients,” and then go a step further to make it easier for the reader by having an alphabetized list to help you check all the labels of the products you currently use. One of the many things I like about No More Dirty Looks is that they don’t tell you to just get rid of your products immediately. On the contrary, Ms. O’Connor and Ms. Spunt recommend replacing each product only after you have finished it. Then you should take a very thorough look into what is out there to replace it, or, make it yourself.

That beauty recipes are included is a great part of the book . Don’t panic when I write that they are do-it-yourself recipes. In fact, they are crazy simple and will cost you very little money. In fact, if you compare what you paid in the past for the alternatives, you would realize it’s inexpensive to make them.

There are so many excellent points that are made in No More Dirty Looks.  There are lots of things that Ms. Spunt and Ms. O’Connor have you think about and mull over, such as with this pointed quote,

“CliffNotes: no government agency has your back here.”

One of the scary statistics: “Only 11% of the 10,500 ingredients determined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be used by the cosmetics industry have been tested for safety by a publicly accountable agency.” The big question is, “Why?”.  If many of the chemicals in products have been shown to be carcinogenic or toxic, how come they are they still on the market? As Ms. O’Connor and Ms. Spunt point out, the beauty business is almost entirely self-regulated. Also, the doses of the chemical used is small. However, we do not know what the effect will be over the course of our lifetime.

The fact that Ms. Spunt and Ms. O’Connor even have to write about the dangerous ingredients in well-known brands is sad enough; what is deplorable is that they point out that these ingredients are still not regulated!

An excellent site that I personally love, and is recommended in No More Dirty Looks:   http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

The Environmental Working Groups’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database was founded by Stacy Malkan and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics

There are chapters on your hair, face, makeup, body, and nails. At the end of each thoroughly resesearched and information packed chapter, there is a, ‘Guide,” with Ms. O’Connor and Ms. Spunt’s favorite products.

There is a chapter on your diet, in which they explain how important it is to really examine what it is you’re putting into your body, not just on it!

Diet most certainly plays a “crucial role” in one’s health. They even have a Shopping List which tells the reader that if they’re going to eat only ten things, eat the following…..Sorry, you have to read the book.

The chapter on Lifestyle is also excellent and, it too, includes a, “List,” for helping yourself to look “your absolute best.” They write about things that you *can* control, unlike some other things in life.

Ms. O’Connor and Ms. Spunt have many experts such as toxocologists and dermatologists to “make sense of the science.” Also, the list of resources is helpful: other books worth reading, films worth watching, places to shop for clean beauty items and things you can do. No More Dirty Looks will make it easier to make the change to clean cosmetics.
