I’m very excited to write about OGARIO, London’s hair care products that have arrived! It wasn’t until the beginning of November (2011) that they were distributed. The hair salon was founded twenty years ago by Norris Ogario; his philosophy is to “deliver impeccable service every time, and make each one of our clients the centre of attention.”
OGARIO London’s new products, which were sent to me to sample, were developed by the Islington hair salon boutique. The salon-developed hair care range of products contain plant extracts and essential oils. The special Protein Protect formula is a blend of pro-vitamin B5 and proteins to nourish hair.
Of course, if the products were not cruelty free, they would not be reviewed. However, I would like to post the official statement:
“All our products go through rigorous laboratory testing to certify that they are safe to use and we never test them on animals. Once we’ve verified their safety, we test their performance in our hair salon. We combine our 20 years of hair care experience with direct feedback from our customers to ensure our products perform to the highest standards.”
On OGARIO’s website page, there is a list of ingredients used in the products, and why they were chosen: http://www.ogariolondon.com/#/ingredients
After I wrote and told OGARIO that I loved both the shampoo and conditioner, they disclosed that I was the first person in North America to have the honour–(to use the spelling as if I was in London!) to try their products!

The above is a photo of the Hydrate and Shine Shampoo for dry and colour-treated hair that was sent. It has a screw on cap, and when you open it, you can immediately smell the lovely fragrance of the citrus oils.
The above photo is that of the Hydrate and Shine Conditioner for dry and colour-treated hair. Like the Ogario shampoo, the Conditioner has a screw on top. I believe this is the thickest, and most luxurious conditioner I’ve ever tried.
See how thick it is after giving the bottle a little squeeze?
Without question, the shampoo and conditioner had my hair looking shiny, and with a wonderful aroma, all throughout the day. The one suggestion I have is to use a different type of cap for the shampoo, as, if one is not careful, too much will spill out at once. The quality of the products, though, I recommend without any reservation at all! A must-buy.
If you check the website for details, or visit the salon in north London, there are offers to buy the shampoo and conditioner at special prices. OGARIO London will not only present them in a beautiful gift box, but also take 15% off too, as a gift to you. There are also savings of 20% to be made when you opt for year-round shiny, healthy hair. (This is for UK customers only—they are working on a subscription package for the rest of the world.) I am not affiliated with OGARIO London, so my suggestions are just that—suggestions. I do not profit in any way!
Norris, Creative Director of OGARIO London, began his career as an apprentice in London’s West End. Rachael, the Managing Director, was very kind, and was the one who submitted the following questions to Norris to answer.
Norris, I read that you took over a former green grocer’s; and now very appropriate—your salon business hair offers an exclusive, natural-based range! You opened your salon twenty years ago because you wanted to build a salon with a “difference; which delivered a personalised customer experience.” What specific things did you notice that you wanted to change when you started OGARIO?
At OGARIO, we’re focused on ensuring your experience is as personalised as possible and you won’t be passed from pillar to post because our stylists are equally skilled at cutting and colouring hair. We find that when these skills are segmented and you have one person cutting and another colouring hair, the process can become like a production line. We make sure the consultation is a collaborative experience at OGARIO. We listen to you, discuss your ideas and share our ideas to make sure your hair is the best it can be. The key to a great haircut or hair colour is communication – and for that you have to give people time.
Norris, you have have owned and operated OGARIO London for the past twenty years. What was the inspiration for creating your own line? How are you products different from what is on the market now?
I’ve had (Ogario) in London for 20 years. I wanted to develop a product range for my salon that matched the quality of the hairdressing and service we deliver – and so began a journey founded on three main principles.
First, the products had to work. They needed to clean and condition all hair types, including colour-treated hair, leaving it shiny and ready to style. Secondly, I wanted to use quality ingredients that would nourish hair – to look healthy, it needs to be healthy.
Lastly, the products had to enhance the customer experience. Our clients love the calm, peaceful atmosphere in our salon and the products had to be an extension of that experience. We believe we’ve delivered on those promises.
Unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure of a visit to OGARIO. Would you describe some of the ways that you provide a “Calm, peaceful atmosphere,” in your salon?
We recently interviewed our clients for a short film we are making about the salon and our products. We like to give our clients personal space – they lead busy lives and often this is the only time they get to themselves. We never rush our clients and they value the time we give them, saying it adds to the calm atmosphere. The aromas from the essential oils in our products enhance this feeling and our clients compare our salon to a spa experience.
Now that I’m using, and loving, OGARIO London’s shampoo and conditioner, there is no doubt that it’s why my hair continues to look very shiny and healthy! Do you have any other suggestions to keep my locks looking that shiny?
Our philosophy is that to achieve shiny, healthy hair it needs the right nutrients – inside and out. Check your diet and drink plenty of water. Vitamins A and C, found in green vegetables, help the scalp to produce sebum, a natural oil, essential for great condition and to promote shiny hair.
And don’t forget to check the ingredients in your hair care. Look for products containing those that will nourish – pro-vitamin B5 is a fantastic emollient, and in our experience really shines hair. Using products containing proteins helps too, fortifying and softening. Keratin, a protein, is the key structural component of hair and we’ve also used soy, silk and wheat proteins in our salon-developed range, combining them with pro-vitamin B5. Avocado oil, another amazing constituent, is in our conditioners and hair masque as it contains fatty acids and vitamins A, D and E – vital for healthy hair and scalp and the basis for hair that shines.
I was very surprised to read that Marshmallow root was used in your hair products!
How does this help dry and colour-treated hair?
If you’re looking for something to tame tangled locks, look no further than the marshmallow root, the herb not the sugary treat! Found in southern Europe, North America and Asia, this sweet-tasting herb offers softening and soothing properties for hair. It also contains vitamins A and C and is a great source of protein. We’ve combined it with tamarind, giving dry and colour-treated hair as much moisture as we could pack in.
Thank you to Norris for taking the time to answer the questions! Also, thank you to Rachael for submitting the interview questions to Norris, and for sending the fabulous OGARIO shampoo and conditioner for review!
