Beautisol self tanner & Sinead Norenius

We all know that there is no such thing as a “safe tan.” Period. So, what’s a guy or gal to do who wants a nice faux tan? Have you tried Beautisol, the self tanner?!

The cruelty free, self tanner was sent to me by none other than the Founder and Spokesperson of Beautisol, Sinead Norenius. Ms. Norenius did not request that I review it; she very casually tweeted if she could send it to me–after I wrote about another self-tanner. It was an invitation to try, with no expectations whatsoever.

I’m reviewing Beautisol here on my blog because not only is it cruelty free, but I also recommend it! I do not make any profit from this recommendation, and all links are for you to just check it out for yourself. I tested Beautisol, and so did one of my children, my daughter.

If you’ve ever seen this on the Home Shopping Network, I’m going to assume you ordered. This is always sold-out after Sinead demonstrates this on herself, and her models. She’s very bubbly and energetic.

Sinead Norenius:

Who is Sinead? You may already know her as the celebrity spray tan artist, but she’s been in the skincare industry for over fifteen years, and is a licensed aesthetician.  She is also the founder of iFabbo (International Fashion and Beauty Bloggers Organization), “which helps to unite the leaders in the profession to promote individual and professional growth and set standards and guidelines for the fashion and beauty blogging industry.” Yes, I was accepted, and am a member, but of course that has no bearing on my review; that’s part of my agreement as a member—only honest reviews!

Why did Sinead start Beautisol?

Sinead’s “inner bronze goddess felt obliged to share her wealth of knowledge…to educate the self-tanning challenged.”

In addition to the fact that it is cruelty free, why do I recommend Beautisol?

1. It works! and is easy to use. How easy?

As part of the kit, I received cards (tanner guide/application guide):

If you’re still unsure?

Sinead is on Twitter: Beautisol and Self Tan Queen

You can leave a comment on the Beautisol Facebook Page.

2. Does not streak! How come? The formula is great and here is what is also part of the kit:

 latex gloves and application mitt:

3. There was a scent, but nothing objectionable. Sinead describes the scent later in the post.

4. It felt very smooth being applied and was moisturizing.

5. When Beautisol fades, it looks very “natural”

I can’t come up with anything that I think someone would find “objectionable,” or to be a negative. Yes, the color looks very dark when applied, but as my daughter and I are very fair-skinned in complexion, that is not indicative of what the resulting color was. We found that Beautisol gave us both a very natural looking tanned complexion. So, don’t panic when you start to apply if you are fair-skinned!

More about Sinead and Beautisol:

Sinead, I read that you started your career as a Para-medical aesthetician. Tell us about that, please.

I ran an esthetic department for a prestigious plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New Port Beach, CA.  I not only handled all the esthetic clients but also did pre and post op care on patients that had just received laser resurfacing (CO2 Erbium Yag) , TCA peels, Dermabrasion, or any other invasive procedure. It was an incredible learning experience and I loved being on the medical side working with this particular doctor and his staff, as they taught me so much about business, patient care and innovation!

You wrote that you want to “educate the self tanning challenged.” How do you define that? Smile

Self-tanning can be challenging especially if you don’t have anyone to actually show you how to do it!  I wanted to be that person!  I wanted to be the person that you could look up on YouTube, grab your computer or iPad, walk into the bathroom, and show you step by step how best to apply self-tanners!  There are plenty of make up “gurus” who do amazing “how-to’s.” I wanted to provide a higher level of education and demonstration so people never had to second guess what they were doing because once you do it right, self-tanning and having a gorgeous glow can make you feel so great!  Just like putting on a fabulous lipstick, foundation or eye shadow!

When you were developing Beautisol, how much did your clients/consumers, play into the creation of the final product?

People may not be aware that social media and my blog have basically guided my entire brand from the beginning.  Instead of creating a brand and then presenting it to my “audience” or consumers, I asked them for advice, I asked them what was missing from the market place and what types of improvements they would want to see – such as a solution for the yucky odor, better videos for application, a better resulting tan color on the skin etc..  I made it my mission to personally solve all of those pain points for them.  I then also allowed my readers and customers to help shape the brand by choosing the products names, colors, logos etc….Everything was picked by them!!  And I still do it. I am going to be doing another round of voting in the upcoming weeks as we are getting ready to launch 5 new products into the market place over the next 6 months so I need input again and wouldn’t turn anywhere else for help and guidance other than my consumers and champions of the brand! I love it!

I know that you and your fiancé, Chris, own and manage Beautisol. How did you decide to go into business together?

It honestly just kind of happened!  I clearly respected him as an entrepreneur and a businessman as he had started and run several technology start ups so I knew he was a good leader and had the operational skills I was lacking.  I am a good visionary, creative person – he’s an “ops” guy!  He also wanted to help me see my dream come true of owning my own product line so he said, “If you are really committed, I have the time and I am willing to partner with you because I believe in your vision, too!” ;)

What is it like to start a company with your significant other, and work together day in and day out?”

Not that many people know that my fiancé, Chris Raniere, and I started the company together, and it has been a crazy ride to say the least.  The good thing is we both have very different skill sets and we assume very different roles. I am the formulator and the more creative side and he is a numbers guy and really good at building corporate structure etc.. He has taught me so much, and I hope to say I have taught him a few things about self-tanner! ;)

How would you describe the scent of Beautisol?

… like fresh linen!  Nothing too masculine, nothing too feminine!  This scent is key as it is actually our PURE SCENT fragrance technology.  PURE SCENT is our odor eliminating technology out of Europe that almost acts like “Febreze” on the skin by neutralizing and drastically reduces the yucky processing odor that self-tanners and spray tan are infamous for, by up to 80%!!  It is not just a fragrance cover-up, it is an actual technology and it smells good too!  ; )

Most challenging aspect, and the most rewarding part, of owning Beautisol?

The most challenging aspect of owning , to be honest, is cash flow! We are on HSN and that requires a lot of inventory up front and it can be constricting to a small business like ours!

The most rewarding part is talking to and receiving feedback from my customers!!  I have seriously cried on several occasions from peoples’ letters or comments saying how great Beautisol has made them feel etc….I have a couple of letters and comments that I keep near my desk, so when I am having a crappy day I have the constant reminder of why I am doing this and it makes it all worthwhile!!

I read your tweets about new products coming soon. Will you reveal what they are?

We are coming out with a gorgeous new Body Illuminator and a really cool new body bronzer that I can’t talk much about right now but just think… tea tanning!! ;)

Some self tanning tips from Sinead:

“Ever notice that spots like sun-spots, melasma or old acne scars get darker and more noticeable when you’ve slathered self-tanner over them? I have the solution! Once you apply self-tanner to the area, take a dry, clean Q-Tip and gently buff the area of excess product. This will minimize the appearance and create a more even tone.

An easy way to soften or slow down the absorption of self-tanner on areas that tend to grab a lot of product such as the elbows, knees and heels is to use a dry wash cloth to gently buff the areas.  It will pick up some of the excess self-tanner and prevent you from unsightly “tell–tale” signs that you got into a fight with your self-tanner and lost!”
