Pore Shrinking Basil Toner Recipe

Pore Shrinking Basil Toner Recipe

The recipe for this pore shrinking basil toner is from a previous review of Sunny Subramanian’s recently published book, The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty: 125 Recipes for Vegan, Gluten-Free, Cruelty-Free Makeup, Skin and Hair Care Products.

As I promised in that post, in order to give a thorough review, I would be taking the time to make the recipes. The first one I have for you is the Pore Shrinking Basil Toner, which I would rate as very easy to make. In fact, the only things that I personally had to purchase were lemons, and a glass spray bottle. I already had fresh basil growing in my garden, a mortar and pestle, a fine-mesh sieve, and boiling water. Yes, that’s it!

First, why would you want to make this recipe. Sunny makes that perfectly clear in the introduction. I wasn’t aware of the fact that basil shrinks the appearance of pores. Then, as in all of the recipes, there is a note as to whom the product is best for, and tips and possible cautions (in case you may be allergic to an ingredient, etc.).

So, here I am with the first step, washing off the freshly picked basil.

Pore Shrinking Basil Toner

Here you can see that I have Sunny’s book open to the Pore Shrinking Basil Toner recipe. Notice the easy-to-follow recipe and the beautiful photographs of the steps. You’ll want to buy the book, so I’m not writing out the exact directions.

Following the easy directions:

I have a two piece lemon juicer. Sorry, I washed and dried the top part (the juicer/strainer)—so you see it after the fact on top of my book. The bottom half has a lot more lemon juice than you actually need for the toner. I thought it might look like a silly photo with a just a few squeezes of the lemon that is required.

Sunny writes about the superstar ingredient in the toner, the basil, and how it helps your skin with redness, acne breakouts, and helping to fight wrinkles.

And this, my friends, is how it looks in Sunny’s book! A beautiful presentation that I am not going to try to compete with!

The directions are clear, and the Pore Shrinking Basil Toner Recipe is very easy to make. The toner should be stored in your refrigerator and will be fresh up to two weeks.

I highly recommend the The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty: 125 Recipes for Vegan, Gluten-Free, Cruelty-Free Makeup, Skin and Hair Care Products. I think the recipe is great! It’s available in bookstores and online at Amazon.com.

MoYou London: Nail Polish, Plates, & Tools

MoYou London

MoYou London is a cruelty free and vegan company based on London, that has sent me some items to review for you. In addition, I have purchased MoYou London products, so I can say without any hesitation that if you’re looking to try nail stamping MoYou London will help you to always have beautiful looking designs on your nails, and with great, quality products.

MoYou London

MoYou London has a really big collection of nail art plates, specially formulated nail lacquers for expert stamping, and just the right tools to help with the process. For example, below you will see one of the stamping nail art plates: Artist. number 03. There are also the following MoYou London tools: a marshmallow stamp, a scraper, and two nail lacquers.

I’ve included some photos (with low lighting), as I’m working in my kitchen late at night.

Now, I’m not going to pretend that I got this on my first try. I practiced quite a bit, but once I got the hang of it, I had no trouble at all.

I’ll do a tutorial in a later post, but for now, here are some tips that I’ve learned so far.

This seems obvious, and yet when I went to try out the second stamping plate, I forgot- you have to remove the blue protection sticker before you can use the plate!!

The quality of the nail art plate, and the polish you use for stamping does make a difference. Why? Well, first there are tons of nail art plates on the market. The plates that aren’t etched deep enough will not work as well! And while this doesn’t effect the stamping, it is such a pleasure working with the MoYou London plates. They are mounted on plastic backing, so you don’t have to worry about dealing with sharp edges. I also love that there is a beautiful protective sleeve to keep it safely stored.

Second, yes, you can use any brand of cruelty free polish for your nail stamping. However, thinner nail polish, and the quick dry polishes don’t work as well. I did experiment, and MoYou London polish most definitely made a difference in the quality of the nail stamp.

MoYou London

No, I don’t make any money telling you , it’s just to save you both time and money.

The two MoYou London polishes are in a 9 ml bottle. and are 5-free. I put one coat of Last Dragon, on all my fingers, except my thumb, which has two. That glittery dark purple is beautiful! Purple Punch, a very pretty lilac shade, was used for the design.

I took some photos by the black and purple plants in my backyard.

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

I received a complimentary review copy of The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty, and I can’t wait to tell you about it.   I have already started to read the copy that was sent to me. I first showed it off on Instagram.

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

Sunny Subramanian was the very first vegan beauty blogger to make a name for herself. Now, this super mom and super blogger is an author! Great bragging rights, Sunny! This beautiful book has the complete title: The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty: 125 Recipes for Vegan, Gluten-Free, Cruelty-Free Makeup, Skin and Hair Care Products.

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

Before I charge ahead about the book, let me tell you some more about this compassionate chick, Sunny. Back in 2007, Sunny became the very first vegan beauty blogger, and now she’s the leading authority on cruelty free and vegan beauty and lifestyle. I’m sure you already know this, but I’ll repeat it for those living under a rock. Sunny’s blog is veganbeautyreview, and her goal with both her blog and her book is to, “show the world that veganism can be fun, beautiful, and delicious.”

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

Part One of The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty is the “Ins and Outs of Vegan Beauty.” That includes: Vegan Basics, Why DIY Beauty Products are Better, and Essential Vegan Ingredients and Equipment. This is chock-full of all the information you need in one handy guide.

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

You’re reading my blog, so obviously, you already know that sadly, in 2016, there are still so many cosmetics that are tested on and/or contain animal products. One of the many reasons that I love Sunny’s book is because in Part Two not only are there are only cruelty free, vegan and non-toxic recipes–but also, if gluten in cosmetics is a concern to you, you need not worry. All of them are gluten free! Sunny has made sure not to leave anyone out, since although it’s a “chick’s guide,” there are also recipes for unisex beauty essentials.  There are 125 recipes in total, and I bet that anything that you have considered making will be in this book.

In wanting to give a thorough review, I’ve not only been reading Sunny’s beautiful book, but I’ve also been taking the time to make the recipes. My photos and thoughts on trying to make the recipes (letting you know how easy, or very easy) they were to make, will be in future posts.

The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty

Here are some more things you need to know about the The Compassionate Chick’s Guide to DIY Beauty:

All of the recipes are written with very clear, step-by-step directions. Most of them have photos for each step, too. All of the recipes have a note as to whom the product is best for, and tips and possible cautions (in case you may be allergic to an ingredient, etc.). There are over 100 color photos, and helpful charts and diagrams. There is also a gift section, an ingredient list and their beneficial properties, and a very large vegan resources section.

I love that in the title of the book the word Compassionate is used. While I’m sure that those who want to end animal cruelty will want to purchase the book, I hope that other people, whether they are a vegetarian, or a fully committed vegan, will also get this go-to resource!

Void Beauty Kiss Me Review and Photos

Void Beauty Kiss Me

Void Beauty Kiss Me, is a certified cruelty free, vegan, 5-free nail polish brand, and shade that I received. I totally love their motto, “Beauty doesn’t have to be toxic.” The first Void Beauty shade I reviewed Hissy Fit, can be found at the link. Void Beauty is eco-friendly, and is USA based.

We all certainly want our beauty products void of the things that, as the company writes, “aren’t so good for us,” so Void Beauty is free of the harmful chemicals Toluene, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin and Camphor. In addition, Void Beauty also does not have the toxic ingredients of Lead, Parabens, Xylene, and Ethyl Tosylamide.

I’m also happy to write that Void Beauty is certified cruelty free from Leaping Bunny and PETA!

Void Beauty offers customers a wide variety of nail polish shades in a 0.5 fl oz-15 ml, beautiful, glass bottle. Now, “All you have to do is pick the hues to suit your mood.”

Here is the gorgeous Kiss Me shade!!

I took lots of photos of Void Beauty Kiss Me, an amazing shade of hot purple, with gold micro flecks.

In the photo below, I have two coats of polish, and a top coat, on all my nails. As you can see, this was taken outside, on a beautiful, sunny day. This is the only photo with a top coat on, as it’s always recommended to make any nail polish last longer.

The photo below was actually taken the firsr day I put the Void Beauty Kiss Me on my nails. I did not apply a top coat.

Again, another photo taken on the first day I put Void Beauty Kiss Me on my nails, with no top coat. Beautiful shade and shine, and this one was even taken indoors!

This last photo was also taken on the first day that I applied Void Beauty Kiss Me. I had not yet applied a top coat. This was taken indoors, posing against an orchid.

Void Beauty  Pros and Cons

I love that Void Beauty Kiss Me is free of so many harmful chemicals, but one suggestion I would make is that something–the nail polish bottle, or the website, had a list of ingredients used in the polish. There is no nail polish box, but it was very safely and securely wrapped up, and shipped from Amazon. If for some reason you don’t want to place an online order, Void Beauty has a list of stockists on their website.  For the current price, and other information about the polish that is void of many of the awful chemicals that may be in your current nail polish, make sure to check out the Void Beauty website.

Void Beauty has very kindly offered a 15% off promo code for you to use when ordering:  MOXIE716. Let me know if you have any difficulty with that.

Aromafloria Stress Less Bath Salts Review

Aromafloria Stress Less Bath Salts

If getting rid of your aches and worries from a stressful day soaking in a warm bath with a soothing, calming aroma of lavender sounds great, then you need to read about a cruelty free and vegan product I received: Aromafloria Stress Less Bath Salts.

For almost thirty years, Aromafloria has formulated body care and aromatherapy products. Each of the items is formulated with a custom blend to deliver health benefits.

 Aromafloria Stress Less Bath Salts

For example, the product I tried was the Arommafloria Stress Less Bath Salts, which contains these active aromatherapy essentials:

Lavender—which will help to reduce and ease your worries
Chamomile—which helps to calm the mind and will make your skin soft and smooth
Sage—helps to rid you of irritability so you have a better feeling of well being

Aromafloria aromatherapy products are manufactured in a USDA Certified Organic facility that is 100% wind powered. The ingredients are all from fair trade markets, and Aromafloria ensures that their suppliers adhere to the highest ethical standards. Aromafloria Stress Less Bath Salts

Unwrap the plastic sealing the cork neck of the 23 oz / 652 g container of Aromafloria Stress Less Bath Salts, and with just one little whiff you’ll smell the beautiful aroma. Notice the nice-sized bath salts! This photo was taken outside so you could see the true hue of the Aromafloria Stress Less Bath Salts.
Aromafloria Stress Less Bath Salts

Here’s a photo taken in the evening, so the bath salts appear darker.

Aromafloria Stress Less Bath Salts
Add 1 cup of the Stress Less bath salts to running, warm bath water (temp. 98F – 102F), and soak in the tub for 20 minutes. It will help draw out pollution, oils, dirt and sweat, etc. from your skin, and increase blood circulation. To that end, if you have a history of high blood pressure, you need to consult your doctor before using this!

There are no cons! The Aromafloria Stress Less Bath Salts added to my warm bath water was a great way to de-stress, and I not only loved the aroma, but my skin was incredibly smooth after soaking. The ingredients are cruelty free and vegan, and printed on the label. In addition, at the time of this post, it was very reasonably priced at $16.00. Stay tuned for more reviews of the products that I received from Aromafloria!
